Introduction

1.What it is!

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures that can significantly impact a patient’s physical health, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life. Effective management of epilepsy extends beyond seizure control—it also involves consistent medication adherence, monitoring of triggers, and attention to mental health, as mood disorders such as anxiety and depression are commonly associated with the condition. Despite advances in treatment, many patients still face challenges in tracking their symptoms, communicating with healthcare providers, and maintaining adherence to prescribed therapies.

This project proposes the development of an App and Telehealth System for Seizure and Mood Monitoring for Epileptic Patients with a Medication Diary. The system is designed as a comprehensive digital health solution that integrates mobile technology with telehealth capabilities to support continuous, patient-centered care. It enables users to log seizures, track mood variations, manage medication schedules, and share relevant health data with clinicians in real time or during virtual consultations.

2.Concept

The core concept of this project is to create a unified platform that bridges the gap between patients and healthcare providers through digital monitoring and remote care. The mobile application serves as a daily companion for patients, allowing them to:

  • Record seizure events, including type, duration, and potential triggers
  • Monitor mood patterns over time to identify correlations with seizure activity
  • Maintain a medication diary with reminders to improve adherence
  • Store and visualize personal health data for better self-awareness

On the other side, the telehealth component allows healthcare professionals to remotely access patient data, assess progress, and provide timely interventions. By combining self-monitoring tools with clinician oversight, the system promotes proactive and personalized epilepsy management.

3.Project Motivation & Objective

The motivation behind this project arises from several persistent challenges in epilepsy care that affect both patients and healthcare providers. One major issue is inconsistent monitoring, as many patients rely on memory to report seizures and mood fluctuations, often resulting in incomplete or inaccurate records. Medication non-adherence is another critical concern, where missed doses or incorrect usage can significantly impact seizure control and overall health outcomes. Additionally, limited access to care—particularly for individuals in remote or underserved areas—makes regular in-person consultations difficult. Compounding these issues, mental health aspects such as mood disorders are frequently under-monitored despite their strong influence on quality of life and treatment effectiveness.

To address these gaps, this project leverages mobile and telehealth technologies to create a more integrated and patient-centered approach to epilepsy management. The goal is to empower patients with practical self-management tools while enabling clinicians to provide more timely, data-driven, and personalized care.

The primary objectives of this project are to design and develop a user-friendly mobile application that allows patients to log seizures, track mood, and maintain a structured medication diary. The system will incorporate telehealth functionality to support remote communication and seamless data sharing between patients and healthcare providers. It also aims to improve medication adherence through reminders and tracking features, while offering data visualization tools that help identify patterns, trends, and potential seizure triggers. Furthermore, the project emphasizes holistic care by integrating both physical and psychological monitoring, ultimately enhancing accessibility, continuity of care, and overall patient outcomes—especially for those with limited access to traditional healthcare services.
